Awesomely American, 3 Modern Designed Spaces in the US of A

Modern Design is the best kind of design.  Whew, I had to get that off my chest and out in the open. If I could, I would shout it from a mountain, but I don’t have a mountain I have a newsroom blog.  I had a teacher long ago tell me, “It’s sad really, we (USA) are so far behind the rest of the world when it comes to design”.  However true that statement may be, I do have to say we as a country are doing a lot better over these past few years.  And much of that credit goes to Steve Jobs and Apple.  I like to think the shifting trend started once the iPhone came out.  The unique simplicity and magical interface combined with the beautiful design helped usher in the idea that products can and should have great function AND form.  Companies took note, and started redesigning their products to reflect beauty, simplicity and open friendliness.  If you don’t believe me, take a look at Microsoft’s new Windows 8, soon to be released.  You know there is a modern trend brewing when Microsoft deems it official to jump onboard (not surprised they were one of the last though).

This trend doesn’t just apply to tech, and products, but interior and architectural spaces as well.  Maybe it’s just me, but when I see good design, I want to support it by buying its products or using its services.  It’s the quintessential idea that “we take care and thought into everything that has our name and brand on it”.  We used to be a place of chew up, and spit out cookie cutter spaces and buildings.  The change is happening, but ever so slowly.  Here are 3 awesome modern designed spaces found right here in the good old US of A.  Do you have a favorite/famous American modern design space?  Comment, and share it with us below.

1. Chipotle Mexican Grill (Various US Locations) – Chipotle is setting the gold standard for the 21st Century fast dining experience.  Everything they do from their food, service, and restaurant is designed with (modern) perfection.  They have the Burger Kings and McDonalds jumping through hoops trying to meet the high new standards they’ve set.

2. The Fletcher Jones Audi/Volkswagen dealership (Chicago, IL) – This dealership has incorporated textured wall panels to give the building a unique architectural element while using creative open window panes.

3. Live Strong Headquarters (Austin, TX) – The home base for the fight against cancer functions with so many purposes and ideas.  Its open space reinforces team collaboration and gives the feeling of a city street with multiple heights, textures and colors.  It has a gold-rated LEED certified status with numerous reused materials.

The 3 Best Designed (& free) iPad Apps

25,000,000,000.  That is the number of app downloads the Apple Store surpassed last month.  Some kid in China was the 25 billionth download, and ended up winning a $10k iTunes gift certificate and a phone call from CEO Tim Cook.  I could of sworn I timed my download perfectly to win, oh well.  I only pull out these facts to show how large the app community has gotten over these past few years, and the fast pace it is setting.  The number of downloads and the number of apps to supply it will only keep growing.  I’ll admit, I do my fair share of app downloading, but I instill a rule of thumb:  If I don’t see use of the application within a month, it gets the chop.  It’s a good rule to follow if you want to keep you screen “app cluttered” free.  Now I know when getting a new “iDevice” people head on over to Facebook with a status update of, “I got an iPhone/iPad!!! What apps should I download??”.  To which the reply 90% of the time is, ” Nice Grandma! You have to get Shazam, Angry Birds, and Words with Friends, my username is Shap Attack!” (that is my username if you want to play by the way).  I’m not saying those apps aren’t worth downloading (they are), but people are missing out on some really good “blue chip” apps that not only have the magical function but the beautiful design.  I’m listing off my top 3 best designed and…wait for it….FREE iPad apps worth every non-penny you pay.  Do you have an app that didn’t make my top 3 but is just as awesome?  Comment below, and let me know!

1. Paper (iPad) :  A fairly new app by FiftyThree that takes note-taking and idea sketching to a new level of design.  The free app includes one brush (full set of brushes $8) and an amazing designed user experience from the moment you open it.  Watch the video below to get the full experience and capability.

2. Waze (iPhone + iPad)  :  Please do not ever buy a GPS app on any mobile device.  Waze is a free GPS app that combines social crowd sourcing data to give you real time reports on speed traps, traffic jams, construction…etc.  It has search capability, turn by turn navigation with voice command, and no advertisements.  It uses a fun cartoon quality design with soft colors, making it seem like a casual game instead of a hard lined mobile GPS.  I couldn’t come up with a complaint if I tried.

3. Band of the Day (iPhone + iPad) : A fun daily app that allows you to explore and find new great bands.  It uses a monthly calendar with each day being a new band to listen to, read about, and if interested, purchase their music.  I love the design layout, social media integration, and use of large imagery.  It’s a very inviting app allowing music exploration and broadcasting to the fullest.
