Rowland Design’s new Indianapolis headquarters began life as a one story, nearly windowless office building. It’s location on the newly developed Indianapolis Cultural Trail demanded much more.

Rowland Design Before and After

As a second floor was added, the building’s orientation was changed to focus on and welcome the activity of the trail.  Fundamentally designed for efficiency and to enhance our design process, all spaces radiate off the hospitality of the two story lobby core.  The ground floor houses conference and library functions while the second floor is devoted to the design studio and business support staff.

Exterior Before and After

Driven by functionality, both the interior and exterior celebrate the construction materials used as underlying structure and refined finishes.  Sunshades on the exterior of the building cut energy consumption while they add depth to the façade and provide a kinetic experience to users of the trail.  A paneled wall in one conference room glides away to become the enclosure of another.

Nestled in the Glendale neighborhood stands a now two-story home given a fresh new look with a creative exterior redesign and addition.

The Boisson House will be featured in the AIA’s Architects’ Home Tour in Indianapolis September 20 and 21. This year’s theme is the “Inner Ring” Urban Development.

Boisson-BeforeAfter

“This once looked like a typical, red brick, 1970’s ranch, but Architect Eric Rowland, AIA, helped give this home more space and a whole new style. Instead of building out, Rowland designed a second story and reconfigured much of the main level.

A seldom-used dining room was converted to a large foyer and to make room for the stairway. The front door was shifted and enlarged allowing for an oversized door and concrete column helping give the home a more contemporary look. The new second story includes a master suite with vaulted ceilings and a home office.

The owners love all the details both on the interior and exterior.

“This sold me on the idea of hiring an architect,” Kate Shoup said. “We couldn’t have done it without Eric, because of all the ideas he came up with.”

And, they aren’t finished with home renovation projects. An updated kitchen is next on the list.” (Description from Architects’ Home Tour website)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rowland Design Relocating to 702 North Capitol Avenue

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana – Rowland Design will be relocating to 702 North Capitol Avenue, effective November 30.  Building upon a rich 45-year history in Indianapolis the design firm will remain downtown, moving from its current Lockerbie Square location to a newly renovated space along the Indianapolis Cultural Trail.

Rowland Design is partnering with local developer Loftus Robinson to rehabilitate the property which includes a complete overhaul of the interior, reinforcement of exterior walls and the addition of a second story. The 11,200 square foot space is designed toward sustainable initiatives and will pursue LEED Silver Certification. “After working with Rowland on several other projects, we knew this partnership was the right fit for the redevelopment of this building.  A shared vision for what this structure, and really the surrounding area, could become ultimately guided our plans for the space,” said Drew Loftus of Loftus Robinson. 702 North Capitol will be Rowland Design’s third investment in downtown Indianapolis.

“We were able to tailor the entire space to better meet our needs. Our goal was to create an extremely collaborative environment through an open concept studio and a range of flexible meeting spaces,” says Sarah Schwartzkopf, President of Rowland Design. “The city of Indianapolis is part of who we are and remaining downtown was especially important to us. We’re energized by the potential of this up and coming area and very excited about our new location within the city.”

Specializing in architecture, interior design and graphic design, Rowland Design’s new office will showcase the integration of these three disciplines.
