Working with the owner for a third time, the focus of this project was downsizing from a much larger and older family home. A key programmatic expectation was leaving behind the former richly layered environment for a more fresh and streamlined aesthetic.
A light filled, existing garden home served as the new canvas. It had the needed volume and ceiling heights, but on closer inspection lacked character and organization. Newly framed openings are now aligned to one another, and define space between rooms. New bookcases were also created to accommodate an edited library. A new kitchen provides storage, work space, and a daily gathering area. And, new baths complete an overall enrichment. While fully upholstered pieces were recovered to support the new design, antiques and artwork were carefully placed in new juxtapositions. What at first might have seemed provocative to the husband and wife, these beautiful pieces now distill a new energy, openness, and freedom in the home.
